Today was an absolute blast! It was my first time skiing and it’s been about 15 years since Michael has been on the slopes.
He grew up snowboarding and ever since we moved to Oregon, he’s been itching to get back on the mountain. I’ve never done any type of snow sport other than a little bit of snowshoeing. So when he said he wanted to shred for his birthday, I immediately signed up for a ski lesson.
I was slightly nervous, but I skateboarded for several years as a kid and that actually helped me a lot with skiing! By the way, if you’ve never skied or snowboarded… you should 100% take an intro lesson. Trent, the instructor, taught us how to put on our boots and skis properly, distribute weight, all the basic maneuvers, how to turn, and so much more.
When I finally got the chance to bomb a small hill, I could hear Trent yelling, “Don’t forget to carve, Jeanie, carve!” and off I went. Now that feeling of going downhill and moving side-to-side is one of the most freeing and exhilarating feelings. I fell in love with skiing today and we both are so ready to get back on the mountain again! (I do wish this sport was a little bit less expensive.)
What we learned to do next time:
- Stuff a hand-warmer into my gloves. My hands got so numb.
- Wear a face mask. It snowed allll day and our lips, cheeks, and neck were cold.
- Drink loads of water.
- Chapstick.
Here are a few other snapshots from the day. 😊

If you’re not falling, you’re not learning.
Well, boy, did I fall! I had one very embarrassing moment… which involved three freaking ski patrol folks to come help me. Geez. When I got up, I thanked them, avoided everyone’s eye contact, walked up to Michael, and we just died laughing. What’s the best way to move on? Bomb another hill.

After we left, we stuffed ourselves with burgers, went home, and we haven’t left the bed. What an amazing day. 💙
Skis are not just pieces of wood, steel & fiberglass. They are tools for escape, a medium for personal expression, a way to challenge fears, push limits and share incredible experiences with your friends.
